What would you say about my forum's October crop of registeration attempts? (The ones I dumped as trolls, that is)
As part of my "anger study" I somehow managed to be pretty amused at this

I don't rightly know

It doesn't really make much difference actually, human or digital trolls, are still trolls

I was amused at the names they think up, it actually makes it easier for me to discern between real users and trolls. I would have a problem dumping someone like "John_Smith" for instance. That's when I check the IP and email address too

I was talking to AA the other day and he told me that phpBB is coming out with a new release soon which (among other things) will block spam bot registrations.

It stinks of spoofing :wink:

Use the "ban e-mail" facility to block the following addresses:

plus any more that you have repeated problems with. It's virtually eliminated our spam registrations.

Personally, I would go the whole hog and ban ALL generic e-mails like Hotmail, Yahoo, GMail etc as well and only accept ISP-provided addresses.

Wait...are you saying to ban registered members who have a gmail address? That was mine until recently.

Also, I have a new member from the Ivory Coast (as best I can tell). She has not logged on since I've activated her acct. Her email address and username sounds like what a woman might use. So I okayed it. (I have removed registrants whose names sounded bogus.)

I'm not sure I understand why the generic ones like hotmail, etc, are a problem.

Forum has quite a few gmail, yahoo, hotmail, walla, etc', known registered users including family

So far manual "Weeding" has worked pretty well.
Combinations such as:-
kepkoner @mail.ru . . . . . . . kepkoner . . . . . from China
olgazala @list.ru zanaflex . . "buy now" . . . . from england
grusoi @raskru4u.ru . . . . . . grusoi . . . . . . . .from Germany
voostanin @yandex.ru . . . . allergonaut . . . . .from Israel
wernerschleifen @bk.ru . . . . WarnyHH . . . . . .from Philippines

Once the ban is in place no-one can register with a GMail address. Existing registered members are not affected. Anyone trying to register with a GMail address at 5L&2F will get a message along the lines of "GMail is not accepted as it is widely used by spammers, so please use the e-mail address provided by your ISP".

Because they, too, are widely used by spammers.

The bits at the end, like .ru, .uk, .nz, technically called the TLD ("Top Level Domain"), indicate the country of origin. .ru is Russia. hupo has people registering with a .ru e-mail address but an ISP located in China. That's not really a problem. I have a .ws (Western Samoa) e-mail address but my IP puts me in England. IP info is the one to go with.

All e-mail addresses are derived from Web addresses, All you need to is chop everything up to and including the @ sign and put the rest into your browser address bar. In this case it's toservegod.com. Check it out!
