READING: Luke 18:35-43

INTRODUCTION:

Why did the story of Bartimaeus merit special publicity?
Because one day Jesus came!

A/ JERICHO - A picture of the world as man made it.

Represents the pride of human effort, success and achievement.

  • Joshua's Jericho impregnable
  • Ahab's Jericho rebuilt by Hiel
  • Bartimaeus' Jericho 'successful'

Application - Todays world boasts of its achievements and sophistications, but on the wayside lies its true measure of success.

B/ BARTIMAEUS - A picture of our life as God sees it.

  • Bartimaeus was destitute.
  • Bartimaeus was blind.

Application - The Bible teaches that we are spiritually blind.

"They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God." (Ephesians 4:18)
"You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind ..." (Revelation 3:17)

C/ BARTIMAEUS' HEALING - A picture of salvation as God likes it.

  1. He believed who Jesus was.
  2. He acknowledged he needed the Lord.
  3. He threw away the props.
  4. He received his healing.

Application - It is the same today!
